JOB: Chicano/a Studies Department, Cal State Northridge, Assistant Professor rank, Effective Fall 2007 (Subject to Budgetary Approval), Salary based on qualifications and experience

Qualifications: A doctorate or equivalent in applied linguistics with an emphasis on Chicano/Latino language development, first and second language acquisition, and the role of language in the education of linguistic minority and ESL children. A general knowledge of the language experiences of Chicanos/Latinos is preferred with a specialization in the application of language studies to the preparation of teachers. A background in teacher education is desirable as is a second area of specialization and ability to teach in related areas, for example written communication skills. The candidate will have knowledge of Chicano/Latino linguistics and sociolinguistics and the application of applied linguistics to the education of linguistic minority and ESL children. The Department is an interdisciplinary one so the candidate will be expected to have a good grasp of comparative methodologies

CSUN is a Learning Centered University. The successful candidate will be expected to join faculty and staff in a commitment to active learning, to the assessment of learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways that enable students to graduate.

At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.

Responsibilities: The candidate will normally be expected to teach “Language Acquisition of the Chicana/o and ESL Speakers,” in addition to other relevant courses. The standard teaching load for the faculty at Northridge is 12 units per semester although reassigned time may be available for research and/or curriculum development. All professors are expected to advance the skill development of their students. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the field by publishing and participating in professional organizations. The candidate will advise students on career opportunities and support and participate in student-sponsored activities. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to working with an ethnically and culturally diverse student population.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M. A. required. Ph.D. preferred at the time of appointment in appropriate discipline with emphasis in any of the subject areas within Liberal Studies, such as History, Ethnic Studies, Anthropology, and Political Science.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university/college level.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Administrative and leadership experience highly desired.

DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to develop and teach lower and upper-division courses in Liberal Studies.
  • Interest in mentoring students in the Liberal Studies Department.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple-section courses in Liberal Studies.
  • Excellent communication skills and leadership qualities.
  • Record of community service.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  1. Teach six courses per year in area of expertise (two class release time for chair responsibilities).
  2. Advise liberal studies students; consult and assist in Liberal Studies student recruitment.
  3. Collaborate with the Office of Human Resources to recruit qualified instructors.
  4. Assign, evaluate, and supervise instructors.
  5. Plan and administer yearly departmental budget.
  6. Develop, implement, and oversee the Liberal Studies curriculum.
  7. Schedule liberal studies classes.
  8. Conduct periodic program reviews.
  9. Represent and advocate for the Liberal Studies program in the Faculty Senate and other committees and workgroups.
  10. Archive departmental records.
  11. Participate in articulation activities.
  12. Submit required reports to, but not limited to, the Office of Institutional Planning and Evaluation, the Office of the President, and Finance.
  13. Attend Academic Planning Committee meetings.
  14. Oversee accreditation activities for the department.

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with background and experience
