CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: CLS Writing Workshop

CLS MALCS LOGOChicana/Latina Studies: The Journal of Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social invites your participation at its MALCS Summer Institute Writing Workshop at the University of Wyoming, August 3 – 6, 2016.

Two sessions focusing on academic articles will take place: one on Wednesday, August 3, and one on Friday, August 5, 2016.
The MALCS Summer Institute Writing Workshop is one of our formal methods of creating a feminist editorial praxis in the publication of work by and about Chicanas/Latinas. The workshop follows the spirit and mission of MALCS, and it is designed to create a publishing community with the aim of energizing knowledge production through collaboration and institutionalized mentorship.

We encourage applications from writers at all professional levels, including tenured or mid-career professors. Due to the goals of the workshop, we discourage submissions of dissertation chapters. The workshop will be facilitated by Josie Méndez-Negrete—the Immediate-Past Lead Editor—a senior scholar with a strong publication record and extensive experience at various phases of editorial work.

Those interested in participating must submit electronic copies of a letter of application and a final draft of a manuscript by June 1, 2016 at 5:00 pm. This two-day workshop has space for no more than ten participants who are current paid members of MALCS and who must register for the Summer Institute.

When accepted, applicants must provide evidence of membership and registration payment to MALCS, as well as complete all pre-workshop documentations. Also, participants must make a commitment to attend both sessions, and agree to peer review and comment on all submitted manuscripts. After having participated in the workshop, each participant will clearly understand the internal publication criteria of Chicana/Latina Studies, gain specific direction regarding revision, and obtain first-hand knowledge of the journal’s editorial production process.

Applicants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Evidence of membership and registration will expedite the review process for acceptance.

Deadline for submission must be postmarked by June 1, 2016.  Send letter of application and manuscript in electronic form to Josie.MendezNegrete@utsa.edu

    • Dear Nancy,

The writing workshop, as stipulated in the call for submissions, is held at the MALCS Summer Institute—you would have to arrive Wednesday and participate on Friday. Please refer to the call for participants as the guideline for your letter. You may want to state your rank. Clarify that your manuscript, which should be no more than 25 pages not including works cited is not part of your dissertation (as we discourage submissions of dissertation chapters). You may want to state how and in what ways your manuscript amplifies, adds to, or extends the discourse and footprints of the journal. Submit both the letter and manuscript in electronic format to my email address.

Hope this was helpful. I look forward to your submission.

      Best,
      Josie
