About the UMN

The flagship of the University of Minnesota System, the Twin Cities campus is Minnesota’s only land-grant university and one of the most prestigious public research universities in the nation. The University of Minnesota System is driven by a singular vision of excellence. We are proud of our world-class education, groundbreaking research, and community-engaged outreach, and we are unified in our drive to serve Minnesota. Indigenous students and Students of Color have played an active role in shaping the university. In partnership with community leaders, these students fought for the first American Indian Studies Department (1969) in the nation and the establishment of the African American and African Studies Department (1969). In 1971, the Chicano Studies Department (changed to Chicano and Latino Studies in 2012) was established as the first of its kind and still to this day the only department in the Midwest. In 1973, the Department of Women’s Studies (now Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies) was the first in the nation to offer a women’s studies degree.

Some of these places would include the Minneapolis American Indian Center, All My Relations Gallery, the historic West Side neighborhood, and the public art on Lake Street

Message on Safety

We are truly excited for you to visit Minnesota during the Summer Institute and experience everything the area has to offer. We understand that you may feel some hesitation due to safety concerns. While challenges have existed in the past, conditions have improved and the heightened concerns seen during Operation Metro Surge have lessened. At the same time, we recognize that situations can evolve, and conditions are always changing, so we remain attentive and responsive to ensure everyone’s well-being. Like in any major metropolitan area, it’s always wise to stay aware of your surroundings and take precautions, such as planning transportation ahead of time and staying informed about the neighborhoods you’re visiting. Our goal is to provide a supportive, welcoming experience for all participants, where you feel informed, comfortable, and cared for throughout your visit.

We encourage you to support local businesses, especially those who have experienced harm this year due to state violence.
