Elena Crosley

Elena Crosley (she/her) is a former high school math teacher. A Gates Millennium Scholar, Elena earned a B.A. in Mathematics with a minor in Biology from Bowdoin College, a M.S. in Mathematics from Tufts University, and taught math and science at Georgetown Day School in Washington, D.C. Based on her experience as a woman of color navigating academic mathematics environments as both a student and as a teacher, she returned to graduate school for a Ph. D. to build her change-making capacity to improve the experience for students marginalized by race and gender in mathematics. Elena is a Doctoral Candidate in Educational Studies at the University of Michigan with a concentration in mathematics education and serves as a Research Associate for the National Center for Institutional Diversity. Her dissertation research draws on women and gender studies, feminist theory, educational studies, and interactional analysis to explore undergraduate math advising as a critical site of intervention for retaining students marginalized by gender in mathematics. In her free time you’ll find her playing soccer, hiking, sampling the local ice cream offerings, and visiting the Smithsonian Museums and other Washington, D.C. highlights with her family.
