JOB: Asst/Assoc Prof, Chicana/o studies SDSU

The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies (CCS) at San Diego State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Expressive Culture at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to begin Fall 2011.

The department seeks candidates who have a well-developed research agenda and/or professional projects in the arts or who show promise of sustained scholarly and/or professional productivity. Applicants with a strong background in sexuality studies, alternative research methodologies, and a demonstrated strength in community-based service-learning strategies that link theory with applied work are especially sought. Those who will have completed their MFA or PhD by the start of the term of appointment will be given priority. Applicants without an MFA or PhD currently in-hand should include in their letter of interest a statement of progress for the Assistant level, indicating reasons to expect completion in a timely fashion.

The search committee is looking for candidates who can contribute to the departmental practicum, theory, and methodological approaches to the expressive arts and culture. It welcomes all relevant teaching, research, and/or performance emphases and specializations including culture, literature, folklore, theatre, art, identity formation, relationships of power and other aspects of popular culture involving the study of cultural forms, sites, and contexts. Candidates with expertise in Mexican-origin populations, transborder and transnational issues as well as gender and sexuality in the U.S. are especially encouraged to apply. Evidence of successfully directing graduate student work, demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching/advising in area of specialization and in CCS, commitment to teaching ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse students, and strong interpersonal and communicative skills is solicited.
