Update: Chicana/Latina Studies Writing Workshops, July 2010

Chicana/Latina Studies: The Journal of Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social will still hold Writing Workshops in July 2010 via web-conferencing.

To maintain the journal’s momentum and it’s vital status as the only interdisciplinary Chicano or Latino studies journal of a professional organization, the editors have decided to hold the Writing Workshops in virtual space or via telephone conferencing.

We encourage applications from writers at all professional levels, including tenured or mid-career professors. Facilitators are mid-career scholars with robust publication records and nearly a decade in editorial work.

Two Writing Workshops are offered this summer:
1) Creative Writing, a workshop facilitated by Dr. Tiffany Ana Lopez, editor of creative writing
and
2) Scholarly Article, a workshop by facilitator Dr. Karen Mary Davalos, former editor of Chicana/Latina Studies. Lead Editor, Josie Méndez-Negrete will join the virtual discuss during the second session.

Additional Information:  Send email inquiries to kdavalos@lmu.edu, if the following does not answer your questions.

Participants in the Creative Writing Workshop will schedule a phone conversation with Dr. Lopez.

WHY: It really works!  As the only flagship journal of interdisciplinary Chicano/a and Latina/o studies, the MALCS journal is vital to our professional health.

Past participants who have been published in the journal are: Dora Ramirez-Dhoor (5:1), Rosalia Solorzano Torres (5:1), Ann Marie Leimer (5:2), Patricia Trullijo (6:1), Carmelita “Rosie” Castañeda (7:2), Marivel  Danielson (7:2), and Rosa Furumoto (8:1/2).  Testimonios welcome on the MALCS Blog.

WHAT: Feminist collaboration!
The Writing Workshops are one of the Journal’s formal methods of creating a feminist editorial process. Following the spirit and mission of MALCS, the coeditors offer the workshops in order to energize through collaboration and institutionalize mentorship. Participants bring a work-in-progress, and after shared insights and discussion, they will depart with clear recommendations for meeting internal criteria of Chicana/Latina Studies, specific direction about revision, and first-hand knowledge about our feminist editorial process.

To create an intellectual community, prior to the workshop, participants must read and commented on the material of the other writers. Attending both sessions is required.

WHO: Anyone looking for mentorship and a desire to publish.  We encourage applications from writers at all professional levels, including tenured or mid-career professors.

FINE PRINT: Acknowledge the labor of others.  Although participation does not guarantee publication, the information and experience facilitates the submission and double-blind-peer review process. See above for our successes!

Participants will be asked to sign an agreement that guarantees the journal’s Right of First Review of the material developed through the workshop. The agreement allows authors to compensate participants and editors for their labor and guarantees that the author will formally submit the work to Chicana/Latina Studies for consideration of publication. It also requires the author to acknowledge the assistance of the participants if the work is published elsewhere.
