{"id":938,"date":"2012-03-07T01:50:28","date_gmt":"2012-03-07T01:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.malcs.org\/archive-2017\/?p=938"},"modified":"2012-04-28T19:27:17","modified_gmt":"2012-04-28T19:27:17","slug":"granito-hailed-in-guatemala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/malcs.org\/archive-2017\/2012\/03\/07\/granito-hailed-in-guatemala\/","title":{"rendered":"Film Granito Hailed in Guatemala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>From Egla Martinez: <\/em><\/p>\n<p>We stepped onto the stage of the Teatro Nacional in Guatemala City as the credits rolled after the long anticipated Guatemala premiere of <a href=\"https:\/\/campaigns.sonnetmedia.net\/t\/r\/l\/dyuyfy\/ndryhhhkk\/h\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>Granito: How to Nail a Dictator <\/em><\/a>(Spanish title: <em>Granito de Arena<\/em>). \u00c2\u00a0The huge hall was filled to the rafters with 2500 people who rose to give a sustained standing ovation <a href=\"https:\/\/campaigns.sonnetmedia.net\/t\/r\/l\/dyuyfy\/ndryhhhkk\/k\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">(see the video here)<\/a>, which only increased in volume as the people that appear in the film joined us on stage. \u00c2\u00a0When Maya leader Antonio Caba Caba came up, the crowd erupted. \u00c2\u00a0We are so humbled and gratified by this resounding embrace of <em>Granito<\/em> by the people of Guatemala.<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_960\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/37973893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-960\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-960 \" title=\"granito\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.malcs.org\/archive-2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/03\/granito-300x170.jpg?resize=300%2C170&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"See an excerpt here\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/malcs.org\/archive-2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/03\/granito.jpg?resize=300%2C170&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/malcs.org\/archive-2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/03\/granito.jpg?resize=150%2C85&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/malcs.org\/archive-2017\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/03\/granito.jpg?w=622&amp;ssl=1 622w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-960\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click on image to see an excerpt<\/p><\/div><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And in an uncanny juncture with justice, the dictator in <em>Granito<\/em>, General Efra\u00c3\u00adn R\u00c3\u00ados Montt, appeared before a judge the same day as the premiere to petition for his case to be dismissed, <a href=\"https:\/\/campaigns.sonnetmedia.net\/t\/r\/l\/dyuyfy\/ndryhhhkk\/u\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">and was denied<\/a>&#8211; he will stand trial for genocide. \u00c2\u00a0When we announced the judge&#8217;s decision at the premiere, it elicited another burst of applause &#8211; Guatemalans have been waiting 30 years for R\u00c3\u00ados Montt to face justice.<\/p>\n<p>Already since the March 1 premiere we&#8217;ve received dozens of requests to show the film in universities, Maya communities, civil society organizations and churches all over the country. \u00c2\u00a0We are releasing Granito in Spanish and the Maya languages K&#8217;iche and Ixil as well. \u00c2\u00a0Along with <em>Granito<\/em>, we have launched a project with Guatemalan civil society organizations to restore the collective memory of the years of armed conflict, called\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/campaigns.sonnetmedia.net\/t\/r\/l\/dyuyfy\/ndryhhhkk\/o\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>Granito: Every Memory Matters (Granito: Cada Memoria Cuenta)<\/em><\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0The history of those terrible years is not taught in Guatemala, and the goal of this project is to make the historical memory available in a public archive, and raise public awareness so that that history never repeats itself. \u00c2\u00a0If you have a memory of the Guatemalan conflict to share, or know of anyone who might, or just want to take a look and get involved, please visit the project &#8211;
