Cal)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DEPARTMENT OF CHICANO AND LATINO STUDIES<br \/>\nAnticipated Permanent Full-Time Position (Tenure-Track), Fall 2007-08<br \/>\nAssistant Professor of Chicano and Latino Studies (Social Sciences)<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>THE UNIVERSITY:  Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University. Located in the Sonoma County wine country, 48 miles north of San Francisco, the University has an enrollment of approximately 8,000 students with 500 faculty. The University is organized into six schools: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education, Extended Education, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences. Within the traditional structure is an interdisciplinary program of liberal studies. The University offers bachelor&#8217;s degrees in 42 fields and master&#8217;s degrees in 15.<\/p>\n<p>THE DEPARTMENT:  The Department of Chicano and Latino Studies (CALS) has been a department on the Sonoma State University campus for more than thirty years.  With four full-time positions and a cadre of lecturers, the Department serves approximately seventy major and thirty minor students, as well as a significant number of both lower and upper division general education students.  CALS has a curriculum track for students interested in teaching in the K-12 schools that is recognized by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing as a subject matter preparation program.  The general major is a highly interdisciplinary program that emphasizes real-life applications in policy, education, leadership and social services.  CALS general majors pursue careers in counseling, social services, community leadership, law, business, criminal justice administration, the helping professions, and post-graduate training.<\/p>\n<p>Prospective applicants are encouraged to peruse the department\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Web page at: www.sonoma.edu\/cals<\/p>\n<p>DUTIES OF THE POSITION:  Teaching responsibility is a 12-unit teaching load per semester, consisting of both lower division and upper division courses.  In addition to teaching undergraduate core courses and electives, and CALS GE classes, faculty have the responsibility of advising students, engaging in scholarship, assisting the department with administrative tasks, participation in departmental program assessment, and serving on campus-wide committees.  The successful candidate should be ready to assume responsibility for guiding students in a variety of interests, helping department faculty with program building, and working in collaboration with other Ethnic Studies faculty.  There is also the opportunity to teach in the university\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Freshman Year Experience courses.  Courses in the department that the candidate should be prepared to teach include Bilingual Cross-cultural Education, Chicana\/os\/Latina\/os in U.S. Society, Chicano\/Latino Identity and Heritage, as well as classes in the teacher-preparation subject matter curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>QUALIFICATIONS: To be recommended for appointment, the candidate should have an earned doctorate or terminal degree in the social sciences.  ABD candidates will be considered.  Preference will be given to those with an emphasis in one or more of the following:  Immigration, Public Health, Education, and\/or Labor and US Agriculture. Appointment may be made at the rank of lecturer for candidates who are A.B.D. and are anticipating completion of the doctorate no later than December 20, 2007.  At that time, and contingent on a successful performance review, the position will be converted to tenure track.  The candidate should possess successful teaching experience at the University level, and interest or experience in teaching general education classes.  A record of scholarly activity is desirable, as well as some fluency in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply.  Preference will be given to candidates who have previous teaching experience at the undergraduate level, multi-cultural teaching experience, and\/or significant experience in the emphasis areas.<\/p>\n<p>To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas:  teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative achievement and professional development; service to the University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that &#8220;the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any.  Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his\/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.<\/p>\n<p>RANK and SALARY:  Assistant Professor range:  $45,000 &#8211; $55,000.
