The University is organized around seven colleges. There are approximately 1,700 faculty who provide programs of instruction leading towards bachelor&#8217;s degrees in 60 disciplines and master&#8217;s degrees in 40 disciplines, two joint doctoral programs and an independent doctoral program.<\/p>\n<p>Sacramento is a high-growth metropolitan area with a population of approximately 2 million. Sacramento, a city and county with a very diverse population, was identified by Time Magazine in 2002 as &#8220;America&#8217;s most integrated city&#8221;. As California&#8217;s capital, Sacramento is an advantageous setting for premier academic programs. As a major metropolitan university, Sacramento State is committed to providing leadership in addressing significant regional needs and to enriching our liberal arts tradition. The proximity of Sacramento State to the California legislature and other agencies of state and federal government provides unparalleled opportunities for faculty and students to participate in public service through policy research, internships, and employment.<br \/>\nThe Ethnic Studies Department has been in existence for more than thirty years at California State University, Sacramento. The Department is comprised of four programs: Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies, Native American Studies and Pan African Studies. Ethnic Studies is a degree-granting interdisciplinary program offering course work in the study of the histories, cultures, languages and issues&#8211;past and present-that define and shape the ethnic group experience in the United States. The Department, in addition to its teaching mission, is also involved in research and community based projects.<br \/>\nMinimum Qualifications<\/p>\n<p>Education: Applicants with Ph.D., J.D., or appropriate terminal degree preferred. Applicants completing Ph.D., J.D. or appropriate terminal degree by August 1, 2009, may also apply.<\/p>\n<p>Special Knowledge and Abilities: The person selected for the position should have background knowledge of disciplines comprising the social sciences, education, public policy, or humanities.<\/p>\n<p>Experience: Candidates with experience teaching on the Chicana\/Latina experience, U.S. Mexican Border Relations, Central American, Caribbean&#8211;Latin American diasporic studies, Chicano\/Latino Politics and Public Policy are strongly encouraged to apply. The person hired will also be required to teach general Ethnic Studies courses. Preference is towards applicants who have a strong commitment to teaching and scholarly productivity. Applicants having experience working effectively with diverse populations are highly desired.<\/p>\n<p>Assignments<\/p>\n<p>Assignments include teaching and other instructionally related activities; advising majors and minors; serving on department and University committees; engaging in scholarship and community based service.<\/p>\n<p>Appointment<\/p>\n<p>The position is a probationary tenure-track appointment at the rank of entry-level assistant professor.<\/p>\n<p>Application Procedure<\/p>\n<p>Applicants should submit a letter of application, vita, three letters of recommendation, official transcripts of all college work (unofficial copies accepted until invited for interview), sample syllabi, copies of teaching evaluations (if available), and a statement addressing the challenges facing Chicano Studies and Ethnic Studies and how these challenges can be met.
