“The Latino Midwest<\/a>” Conference at the University of Iowa will examine the history, education, literature, art, and politics of Latinos in the Midwest in light of the demographic changes experienced by states in this region with growing Latino populations. A central concern of this Symposium is the role of international migration in shaping Latino Midwestern communities.<\/p>\n

Confirmed keynote speakers include Jos\u00c3\u00a9 E. Lim\u00c3\u00b3n<\/strong> (Director, Institute of Latino Studies, Julian Samora Chair in Latino Studies, and Notre Dame Professor of American Literature, University of Notre Dame) and Vicki Ruiz <\/strong>(Dean of Humanities and Professor of History, UC Irvine). The University Lecture Committee is hosting our third major speaker, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Dominican writer, Junot D\u00c3\u00adaz<\/strong>. Hancher is hosting our fourth confirmed participant, the singer-songwriter Lila Downs who will close the symposium with a concert.<\/p>\n
