UC Santa Barbara\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Chicana and Chicano Studies Department made history this summer, and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s an achievement that has been at least 30 years in the making. In June, three students participated in Graduate Division\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Commencement ceremony, becoming the first graduate students in the world to earn Ph.D.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s in Chicana and Chicano Studies.<\/p>\n

The students are Jessie Turner, Thomas Avila Carrasco, and Jos\u00c3\u00a9 G. Anguiano Cortez. Jessie received a spring 2012 degree, while Thomas and Jos\u00c3\u00a9 are filing for summer 2012 degrees. For Jessie, Jos\u00c3\u00a9, and Thomas, this degree is a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153family accomplishment,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153a collective achievement,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and one that instills \u00e2\u20ac\u0153great pride.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n
