Call for Papers: Critical Essays on Lorna Dee Cervantes

Published by Wings Press, Cervantes’s latest collection, Drive: The First Quartet was widely anticipated and met with abundant praise from poets and critics alike. Her first publication in fifteen years, it marks the return of a major poetic voice.

Wings Press will publish a collection of critical essays that speaks to the significance of the poet and her work, both within and beyond the Chicana/Latino literary movements.

Possible topics/areas of focus include, but are not limited to:
Interviews with Cervantes; Poetics; Art and Politics; Poetry and music/visual arts; Formalist approaches; Canonicity; Xicanisma; Feminisms; Indigeneity; Multiculturalism; Poverty; Poetic Voice; Transnationalism; Solidarity; Revolutions; The lyric; Loss and mourning; Memory and survival; The poetics of place; Cervantes as cultural activist; Poetry and blogging; The place of Cervantes within Chicana/Latina/American/World literature

Previously published essays and interviews are welcome. Essays may discuss any aspect of Lorna Dee Cervantes’s work; those that focus on Drive are especially sought.

Deadline for 250-300 word abstracts is March 30, 2007. Please send abstracts to: ude.sdnalderobfsctd-3a9e32@nosbigyzeugirdor_azile.

Deadline for completed manuscripts is May 1, 2007. Completed manuscripts should be between 5,000 and 7,500 words, including works cited page. MLA style documentation should be used. Manuscripts should be generated in MS Word (or saved in RTF). Contributors should submit a one page CV and a brief biographical statement with the manuscript.

New site for Natl Latina Inst for Reproductive Health

Check out the newly revised website for the DC-based National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health. The mission of NLIRH is “to ensure the fundamental human right to reproductive health for Latinas, their families and their communities through public education, policy advocacy, and community mobilization.”

Current sites includes info on the Roe v. Wade anniversary, updates on the Hyde Amendment in woc communities, immigration issues, and Latina leadership training series in Houston, Florida, and Minnesota. Also see their great selection of fact sheets and publications

Iraqi Higher Ed on 'brink of collapse'…

Faced with the lingering war and unrelenting sectarian violence, [Iraqi] students by the thousands have been leaving campuses to return home or enroll at universities in other countries. Enrollment fell by more than half at some colleges in the past year alone, education officials said.

Meanwhile, Iraqi professors continue to be targeted for assassination and intimidation. According to Iraq’s Higher Education Ministry, insurgent and militia groups have killed at least 280 academics since 2003, and 3,250 others have fled the country. The violence also has caused as many as 40 percent of Iraq’s professionals to flee the country since the U.S.-led invasion nearly four years ago, according to the Brookings Institution, an independent research group in Washington.

Iraq’s higher education system was once considered the most advanced in the Middle East. Tuition is free at 20 government-run public universities, such as Baghdad University, and 47 technical institutes. Private colleges charge between $114 and $305 annually. But the system has declined dramatically in the past 20 years.

New pub: The Color of Violence

Please take a look and consider using this in your courses,The Color of Violence etc.  Renee Saucedo’s piece on immigration enforcement violence against migrant women, Sylvanna Falcon’s piece on border violence against women (she introduces the term “militarized border rape,”) and Rosa Linda Fregoso’s piece on Juarez would add substantially to the discussion of gender, patriarchy and the role of the state in considering violence against Latinas, especially vis a vis the migrant experience for Latinas.  There are also several pieces by Latinas documenting and recommending strategies for movement building and organizing on the ground, including pieces from Elizabeth “Betita” Martinez, Sista to Sista in New York and (CARA) Communities Against Rape and Abuse in Seattle and much more!

In our efforts to disinvest from the NonProfit Industrial Complex, we are fortaleciendo our grassroots fundraising strategies and the proceeds from this book will go to support INCITE’s work!

MALCS journal seeks focused issues

Dear MALCS Members and Allies:

Chicana/Latina Studies: The Journal of MALCS is now accepting proposals for focused issues. In the future, proposals for focused issues are accepted at any time, but for the first open call, proposals must be received by Jan. 13, 2006.

This new policy for publishing articles, commentary, creative writing, and an extended book review on a specific topic was approved at the 2006 MALCS Summer Institute by the National Advisory Committee and the Associate Editorial Board.

A focused issue is a set of works on a specific topic proposed by a MALCS member who will function as the special editor for the issue. Unlike special issues, the focused issue is part of the regular publication schedule and it is included in one of the two issues that are published each academic year.
