Member Accomplishments – August 2016
MALCSista Gloria Rosario Peral, University of California Merced – B.A Sociology 2014, has been admitted to California State University Northridge, Chicano Studies Master’s program! She will begin her studies this Fall 2016.
Gloria attended her first MALCS at U of Wyoming at Laramie this summer 2016. She was active in Chicano/Latino events, and was co-chair of MEChA at UC Merced, leading the organization during its most successful and significant time. Gloria has also presented at NACCS for several years as an undergrad.
MALCSista Monica de la Torre received her doctorate in Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies from the University of Washington this spring and has started as an Assistant Professor of Media and Expressive Culture in the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University!
After 2 years at the University of Wyoming, MALCSista (and current Membership Coordinator) Vanessa Fonseca has returned to Arizona State University where she received her doctorate in Spanish, but now she is Assistant Professor of English with a focus on multi-ethnic U.S. literature! Her work on New Mexican migration “Following the Manito Trail” was also recently highlighted on Wyoming’s PBS station.

2016 Election Results
Dear MALCSistas,
It is our pleasure to announce that our first, “herstorical,†electronic election designated the following two members as the newest addition to the leadership of MALCS. They will begin their terms on August 07, 2016.
Dr. Cecilia “C.C.†J. Aragón is our next Chair-Elect (2016-2017). This is a three-year position that transforms into the Chair (2017-2018) and into the Chair Ex-Oficio (2018-2019). Dr. Aragón is currently the Director of the Latina/o Studies Program, an Associate Professor of Theatre and Dance, and a Faculty Affiliate of the Gender and Women’s Studies Program at the University of Wyoming. She is also our co-host for the MALCS Summer Institute next week (August 3-6) in Laramie, WY.
Dr. Sandra M. Pacheco is our new At-Large Representative (2016-2018). She is an Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies.
We enthusiastically welcome you both to the Executive and the Coordinating Committees and have no doubt that your energy will help us move MALCS forward.
We also sincerely appreciate each of the candidates who participated in this election and who were/are willing to share their time and effort with our beloved organization and its members.
May we always remember that MALCS is what we make it! In these socio-politically trying times, especially for folks like us, we must continue to work together in order to consistently provide this safe, encouraging, empowering, and necessary space.

Student Scholarships for SI
Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (MALCS) invites student scholarship applications for the 2016 MALCS Summer Institute. MALCS, through generous donations from our members, is offering to cover the conference registration cost of 7 student presenters. More scholarships may be available if there are additional donations to the Summer Institute Scholarship Fund (malcs.org/archive-2017/giving/).
Scholarship eligibility is limited to all students who are current MALCS members and who are presenting at the 2016 Summer Institute. To apply, please submit a 250 word letter of application describing your 2016 Summer Institute presentation and explaining how your presentation fits your research interests and future goals.
The deadline for applications is Monday, July 18, 2016. Please submit your letter of application (250 word limit) to Justine Hernandez at gro.sclam@enitsuJ/archive-2017 by 7/18/16.
Note: Students who have already paid their registration for the Institute will have their registration payment refunded.

2016 Tortuga Awardee
The recipient of the 2016 Tortuga Award is RosalÃa Solórzano Torres, who will be honored at the Awards Banquet on Saturday, August 6th, during the MALCS Summer Institute at the University of Wyoming-Laramie.
RosalÃa Solórzano Torres
RosalÃa is a pioneer of Chicana/o Studies, establishing many Chicana/o Studies courses and degree programs at various institutions. RosalÃa began researching Mexican migrant women in 1976 and teaching in the field in 1979. She is co-editor of Chicana/o Studies: Survey and Analysis (KendallHunt 2007) and is finalizing her second chapbook of poetry, Borderoleando al Amor. RosalÃa has a Masters in Sociology and Spanish from the University of Texas at El Paso and advanced to doctoral candidacy in sociology at Michigan State University, East Lansing. She was Associate Director at the Center for Inter-American and Border Studies at the University of Texas at El Paso and has received research and teaching appointments at the Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies at the University of California at San Diego, the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at University of Texas at El Paso, the Chicana and Chicano Studies Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder, El Paso Community College, and Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. RosalÃa received a Masters in Counseling and Guidance from Webster University in 1992, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and received Diplomate status by the American Psychotherapy Association. At present, she and Dr. James Hernández are working with other faculty to create a degree in Mexican American and Women’s Studies at Pima Community College where both currently teach.
