A note from the Chair
Welcome to MALCS!
By Theresa Delgadillo, Ph.D.
2012-13 MALCS Chair
Welcome to Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social. We are a national organization of Chicana, (Afro/Asian)-Latina, Indigenous women, and gender non-conforming people dedicated to excelling in academia. To serve our communities, our goals are:
- To produce and distribute research in Chicana, (Afro/Asian)-Latina, Indigenous women’s and queer studies;
- To pursue knowledge production based on social-justice;
- To recruit, retain and promote Chicana, (Afro/Asian)-Latina, Indigenous women and gender non-conforming people in higher education.
In this 2012-2013 academic year, MALCS continues to work on creating structures and policies that sustain us over the long-term and prepare us to meet the needs of growing numbers of scholars, artists, and community participants involved in our fields of study. We look forward to working with our members and supporters on enhancing our digital presence and communication, building our membership, and fundraising for our future.
Our excellent Ad-Hoc Committee on Institutional Violence, will collaborate with other organizations to develop best practices and policies addressing this topic. Our Graduate Student, Undergraduate Student, LBTQ and Women’s Indigenous Native Caucuses are developing plans for strengthening MALCS attention to issues in these communities and will work with our Executive Committee to enhance mentorship opportunities within our organization and contribute to research and scholarship in these areas.
We expect this to be another successful year and look forward to sharing our research and knowledge through our journal, Chicana/Latina Studies, on this site, on Mujeres Talk and the MALCS Blog, and at the 2013 Summer Institute at Ohio State University in Columbus.
I want to underscore how talented and diverse MALCS’ membership is – once you join us, you become part of a national, professional, and community organization whose members are active in their respective fields. If you are not already a member of MALCS, please join us! We welcome your contributions to meeting our goals, and offer the opportunity to network. As an all-volunteer organization, we rely on each other in every facet of our work.
Wishing you every success in this academic year’s journey!
